 A Dark Hour (Avengers)
« Thread Started on Apr 2, 2009, 3:02pm »

Steven Rogers laid in the medical bay, eyes closed. Wires of many kind attached to his body and a mask over his face to help him breath. There was a faint sound in the background going "BEEP" every time his heart thumped. It came from a small monitor behind his bed.

The bed he laid on was white and only has one cushion on it. This cushion laid in a metal bed structure, not the Avengers first choice but probably the only one they could salvage from the...mess...

His head lay on a soft pillow, eyes closed. For three days he has been like this and no one has seen him open his eyes. However, his faint breathing and the sound of the monitor reassure them that he is still alive. Bandages lay all over his body, blood stained...

Next to his bed is a small chair. In it sat one of the bravest of all the Avengers, Jarvis. In his hands, a novel, "Peace Like a River" propped open so that he could read. This man had no where else to go, his job was to stay with leader. So he read, watching over him hoping that soon he would awake. He laid the book upon his lap and fixed his eyes upon his friend.

"Master Rogers...I am dreadfully sorry. I should have been there...should have not gone to hide. Maybe then...you would be ok. Rather now you lay here...between life...and death...and we are all hoping for a m-"

He stopped hearing a sound behind him. He turned and nothing was there. He sighed and turned his eyes back to his Captain America.

"Come back to us soon Captain."

He picked up his book again and began to read once again. His heart laid heavy just wanting to see this man up and moving again. All the Avengers were dear to him, this one more so than others.

Vance, a young man who acted older then Captain America, and with all the time travel he had gotten himself into he may have been older then the Cap. But, now he felt small, really small. The Avenger's Mansion had been...broken into, more like a stormed castle really, two people had entered with all their blazing glory and gotten out seemingly unscathed. The had attempted to steal information from the supercomputers, but, Iron Man had stopped them with a virus, hopefully. And a man in his thirties had outran Vance, and the man was carrying a girl on his back. They had also stolen a book from the library, the guest book. It had all the names of everyone who had stepped into the mansion, hero, villain, and civilian. But what did they want with it and where were they now? So many question where left unanswered.

Vance had been working on cleaning up the Simulator room the past few days and took a few hours off to see Captain America. He knew he probably wouldn't be able to talk to him, but it was still good to see his leader. He was now sitting across the bed from Jarvis. Jarvis was saying something to Captain America but Vance wasn't paying attention, he was thinking and feeling out side the room, he could feel everyone in the Mansion, they were all an object to him, and object that he could throw around simply thinking about it. Vance stood up, and listened to Jarvis reading "Peace like...." Something, he couldn't see the rest of the tittle and had never been much of a reader. It sounded interesting but not something he would have read on his own time.

"Cap, just wake up, good grief...we need you." Vance wasn't an orator, but he meant what he said. They needed direction, they needed a counter attack, but most of all they needed their leader. Vance took out his knife and sat back down. He closed his eyes and opened his mind. He disassembled his knife using his mind and put it back together again in just under five seconds. He opened his eyes and smiled approvingly.

Seth stalked the halls he had been helping clean up a bit with everything, the clean up and all. He was on his break now and he was hoping to see the Cap awaken. I don't know how well we can keep going. Iron Man is in charge right now but when he goes off and gets drunk that doesn't help any. Seth's steps resounded on the floor and stepped around the corner and into one of the larger rooms. He walked, more like shuffled, grimly passed a few people and entered the next hall. He continued his walk and walked into the room where the Cap lay unconsious. He saw vance on one side of the bed and across from Vance sat Jarvis, reading a book.

Seth stepped through the threshold and found a seat next to vance and slouched in the chair. The events of the past few days had wiped him out. Normally he would have more respect for the wounded but he was too tired to sit up straight. He looked up and Jarvis was saying something to the Cap but Seth, in the middle of a yawn, heard it as if Jarvis was mumbling. He looked over and saw vance dissasemble and reassemble his knife. Seth closed his eyes and quietly listened to the sound of birds fluttering by.

When he opened his eyes once more he stared at Cap just praying that he would get better. He sat up and then leaned over, elbows on his knees and head in his hands. He closed his eyes again and just litsened. He soon grew bored and played with the wind around him swirling it around and blowing it about. He pulled all air from his face and held his breath until he began to suffocate. He let the air reside back to where it was and then relaxed.

Aftermath, It was one of those things that was absurdly annoying to Tony so instead of dealing with the destruction he found a better way to spend his time sure he had had multiple bouts with alcoholism but at the moment he was annoyed and knew that it wasn't time to be wasting away in a bottle of expensive Scotch or anything else capable of Sating his throughly indocrinated taste buds. Instead he sat in his office, which was not at the mangled pile of inequity that was the mansion trying to decide what to do with it... in the condition it was and the only smart thing he could think of would be to move the team to knew headquarters... Though he was very apposed to them taking over his Malibu beach house.

He did have another idea though one that seemed ideal if they were willing to go for it and it made sense to him at the moment Captain America a very close friend of his was sitting in what appeared to be a coma waiting at the corner of Deaths Footsteps with the rest of the team moping about like a bunch of broken rejects.

Tony had other ideas but he had to get the information that he needed first but then being a MultiBillionire Playboy that happens to supply arms to Shield and various other Groups in the world had also allowed him access to various resources that were not his he had access to like the Shield Satellites in orbit that were designed by Stark Industries in which Tony could access thorough his own systems. He wanted everything he could get about the people that attacked him and through Hank he had learned the Xavier institute had also been attacked and god only knew what kind of information could be gained from there.

From there he found a video of what looked like a werewolf fighting the Fantastic four and he drew a simple hypothesis... Someone was trying to take out the worlds Heroes the ones that had stopped utter destruction time and time again. Mutants, Gods, Interdimensionl super beings and aliens. But beyond that he had nothing a few smatterings of photos here and there but basically nothing about the people that struck existed. So he sat with an unknown number of enemies that potentially had more sensitive data than one could shake a stick at including weaknesses for everyone on who knows how many planets and dimensions.

He felt like his head was about to explode only it wouldn't though the idea of pointing a laser at his head sprang up at one point but then that wouldn't solve anything. Instead he leaned back in his Executive Leather Chair for a moment before standing and walking to the window looking down upon the world from his newest holding the home base of Stark International that looked above New York City. It was from here he planned on striking with the Avengers once they managed to relocate in fact he hadn't even told them of the move he just figured he had an empty penthouse and they had a demolished and potentially compromised home and the security on the Tower made the mansion look like a childs play toy.

Then with a heavy sigh he went to the elevator and dropped to the subbasement Parking Garage that doubled as Private parking for the Avengers that would let them access from an area away from the building with the proper clearance codes, Thumb Print, Voice recognition and Retinal Scan along with a Genetic Scan along the lines of a sentinel only this version was to be used to identify people allowed in though they were built in over the entire building he figured that it would be smart and if you weren't allowed in the system would lock down the entire structure and unleash a torrent of possibly illegal Weapons that tony hadn't sold to anyone but himself.

The Hot Rod was waiting for him sure he could have driven his Aston Martin but a Hot Rod was much more Flashy plus it matched his other business suit. With that he headed back to Ground Zero the remains of a battle doomed form the start.

***

Tony's Flashy set of wheels pulled into the rubble covered drive with a Flashy elegance that didn't fit with the surroundings and he hated looking at it though he wasn't planning on rebuilding this time he figured it wasn't financially reasonable when he had better housing available in another portion of the city. So he got out of his car his colgate smile obviously not happy though there to confuse the hidden Photographers that were sure to be around watching who came and went and why. Instead he ignored them and went through the hole in the wall that was easier to get through than the door that he could have gone through right next to it.

He also meandered down to the depths below the house to what was left of the medical Bay and the battered Form of Steve Rogers. Each of those in the room looked somber and unsure as if waiting for some sign of life in Steve... Tony knew better Steve was to Stubborn to die on them. He had been Frozen for nearly 100 years and came out of it ready to make war once more so Tony was rather sure that he would come out of it at some point.

“According to Various sources we were not the only ones hit so be ready... and get your stuff packed your all moving out.”

His face was passive showing almost nothing he wanted to see how each of them were going to react to him randomly deciding that they would be moving to new quarters without him telling them where, he figured it was worth the surprise and the limo ride when they got there, or at least as a way to get them somewhat less tense. Which was needed simply put the entire room had tension that could be cut with a knife.

OOC: If you guys think i overdid it I will cut back and change my post a bit.

Not long after Vance sat down Seth came in and joined him. Neither of them spoke to each other, Vance didn't even look at him at first. After a few moments though Vance felt the air around him stir and then he noticed Seth started to turn redder and redder then almost purple.

"You okay?" Vance said standing up quickly, but by this time Seth's face returned to normal and he felt a small gust of air blowing about. 'He must have been suffocating himself.' Vance thought bewildered, but before he could push the matter Tony Stark walked in the room. Vance chuckled inwardly, he had always thought that Stark was a bit of a wimp. Tony hid behind all that armor and technology, but it was times like now, when he came striding into the room, instilling fear and submission into everyone else that Vance knew Tony was no joke.

“According to Various sources we were not the only ones hit so be ready... and get your stuff packed your all moving out.” Tony said, Stark didn't show any emotion, except expectancy. Vance had taken several courses on recognizing facial emotions. But what was it that Tony was expecting?

"All our stuff? I have over ten years of 'stuff' here. We should just bring the essentials. How long are we going to be gone? It can't take too long to fix the mansion." Vance asked, He didn't like the idea of leaving the mansion, his home, but, under the circumstances it seemed like a good idea.

Then Vance remembered something he had done forever in the future...or in the past. Time travel really sucked. He had once revived and old man in a coma, telepathically. He had sent a jolt of sorts into the mans brain and revived him, maybe he could do the same now for Captain America.

"Tony. I learned a trick a few hundred years from now that can revive the Captain. You want me to try? It's just a simple direct jolt to his brain, like a defibrillator but for your brain. It's a lot safer too, I know I can do it, will you let me?" Vance asked, it was the truth to if it didn't work Captain America wouldn't feel a thing if it did, he would be up and running in a few hours.

(sorry I haven't posting as BP, I will get back into him later on ... just need to get back into the groove...)'

"Yeah I'm fine... just bored..." Seth replied dejectedly. He was rather depressed with the current state of things. He hated having his "home" violated and with Stark walking in, unannounced, and telling them they were moving helped nothing.

Seth hated moving he just wanted to stay in one place and that would be fine for him. If he wanted anything new or interesting he could move the furniture in his room around or he could go out and see a movie but he hated moving. He mumbled something about the Cap. and not wanting to move but that's as far as he got.

At this point Seth was in no position to take put out any "suggestions" for Ironman. Seth was never much of a leader and probably would never be. He looked up at Tony and was about to say something to him but Vance spoke up first.

"All our stuff? I have over ten years of 'stuff' here. We should just bring the essentials. How long are we going to be gone? It can't take too long to fix the mansion."

Seth realized that he, too, had many things here that would takes time to move.

"And how would we get EVERYONE'S stuff over there? I know you're freakin rich but that would have to cost over a billion dollars to move everything."

Seth hoped that maybe the team could take a break for while. Seth had been through so much lately. It seemed as if trouble followed Seth everywhere he went. Seth waited as Ironman would answer Seth and Vance's comments soon.

"Tony. I learned a trick a few hundred years from now that can revive the Captain. You want me to try? It's just a simple direct jolt to his brain, like a defibrillator but for your brain. It's a lot safer too, I know I can do it, will you let me?"

Vance just blurted the statement out. It seemed as if it had come from nowhere. Seth threw Vance a look like, What in the world made you think of that? but nonetheless it was a good idea, well at least that's what Seth thought.

A Less patient man would be annoyed by the fact that the people in the room hadn't budged a centimeter. Tony knew better he was sure that they were trying to figure out exactly what was going through his mind. Tony instead stood in his black on white business suit with a tie around his neck as he waited with a patience of a man that knows more than the others around him. There was no smugness of his face or annoyance just and irreplaceable calm that would fit well in a shareholders meeting.

"All our stuff? I have over ten years of 'stuff' here. We should just bring the essentials. How long are we going to be gone? It can't take too long to fix the mansion."

Tony could tell that Vance AKA Justice was not happy with Tony's decision but then he didn't expect them to understand it either when it got down to it, he felt it wasn't financially feasible to spend money on rebuilding and upgrading the mansion when he had a perfectly functional Penthouse Suite that was much better Protected, Larger and in general better situated for crises situations. Tony's arms slid behind his back continue to radiate patience and calm apparently unconcerned with everyone's attitudes plus he could just stop paying them out of his bank account he didn't have to give them a salary as he did out of his own good graces even if most other heroes didn't get paid.

"And how would we get EVERYONE'S stuff over there? I know you're freakin rich but that would have to cost over a billion dollars to move everything."

It wasn't long before Vance spoke again voicing an idea One that was possible but one that Tony was against Psychic Surgery, It was something a possibility but Steve was Stable and entering his mind could cause more trouble than it was worth it could help yes but if Vance slipped and did the wrong thing or Jolted Steve in the wrong place Steve would die it was a very dangerous thing.

Once both of them Spoke their Piece Tony gave him an approximation of a Glare with his Blue eyes almost asking them to challenge him, most didn't realize that Tony was almost as skilled in hand to hand as the Captain sure they knew that Tony had trained under him and indeed continued to do so but few realized how good tony had become Tony just wore the suit to level the playing field as it was.

“I would like to point out to you, that we have just had the snot kicked out of us and we have little to no defenses left to us, we have wounded that need the help of a doctor”

Tony made sure to be looking at vance and made extra sure to make an emphasis on the word doctor which Tony was relatively sure that neither of those present qualified as such. Before he continued forward with his words becoming slightly cold and emotionless as if he was planning ahead on an ongoing chess match deciding his move five moves in advance.

“So we move, We make the people that did this think they beat us we give them a feint while in actuallity we will be preparing a counter strike bidding our time gathering intel and then going after the sons of pregnant doges the broke a couple million dollars of my equipment. In order to do that you all have to move out, which you will do, to a location that is prepared for your arrival that is more secure and better protected than this death trap.”

Almost as if to prove his words right their was the sound of crashing object down the hall and something crackling like something electrical shooting off sparks.

“Oh and I will be Having a Media Conference outside telling them that the Avengers will be disbanding... So that the people that did this will think that we are... though we won't be... Unless you kids have a better idea.”

Vance was outraged. He was used to this type of treatment from the Avengers. He had once adored the Avengers even idolized a few of them and when he was first turned down he worked twice as hard to get on and then he got treated like this. All because he LOOKED young. He addressed Tony's first point.

"Oh and a lot of good the DOCTORS are doing, so far our LEADER is in a coma and that's the best our doctors can do." He put extra emphasis on the two words, making sure that Tony knew that the doctors weren't doing any good and that Tony was not their official leader.

"Unless you kids have a better idea.” The last seven words hit Vance like a brick and he exploded with fury but kept it all in, a full out argument with Tony was a good idea, not in the middle of all this.

"Unless you have forgotten, Tony, I am a good fifty years old! I spent most of my life in an alternate future I grew old, I grew wise. I learned from my mistakes." He let a little anger in his voice, why no one could remember he was older then most of them he didn't know. "When I came back here I got stuck in this twenty year old body and relived my teenage years. So why don't you listen up, KID." He put emphasis on his last word. "While we are in transition of headquarters how are we going to fend off the hoards of villains that are going to be trying to kill us? Why don't we just relocate, rearm, and get back to kicking tail?"

Vance was a smart man and he knew an elaborate schemes usually had gaping holes that were exploited, and this one was no different even if it was Tony making the plans.

"Look, kid, I know you think you're invincible, but use your head, we are in no shape to plan an attack, we need to regroup, the Avengers are an icon to thousands of people. If we tell everyone that we have disbanded after two people attacked us, how are we going to look? How are people going to feel? Have you even thought this through?"

Vance was frustrated and unsure how to proceed. He knew the team needed to stick together and not piss each other off and cause a real split, but Tony's headstrong attitude made it really hard.

TONY! Why do you never cease to make yourself bigger than the rest of us! You're a billionaire, yes! But you're no better than the rest of US! Seth screamed inside his head. He had only joined the Avengers a couple of months ago and he wasn't about to loose his head and get fired. Though he did let an icy glare show in his eyes. He WAS very angry and bitter and Tony's descicion and the fact that he didn't let anyone else help decide.

"Tony, I know that you're the one that is the most qualified to be the leader right now but don't you think you could quell a bit of the bitterness within the team by letting us have a descion?"

Seth wasn't sure if what he said would kick him off the team or not. He just needed to let a bit of the anger go out. He knew it would not be healthy just to bottle it all up. Seth listened as Vane voiced his opinions emphasizing, what seemed to be important, two words. Doctors and Leader.

Seth knew that Vance was right. It seemed to him that the doctors were getting no where and Tony was trying to rule the team like a monarchy. NOT COOL! Seth yelled in his mind once more. Disbanding the team did not seem like a good idea, even if it wasn't real even if they were just acting it out.

Seth thought he was going to try and cool down Vance's temper but before he opened his mouth to say a word he bit his tongue realizing that he had let his temper flare also. He sat down in a chair hard, the force of the fall making the front legs a bit up off the ground but it soon settled back down as Seth sat back forward quickly before the chair fell back. He leaned forward with his elbows on his knees and his head in his hands. He had a lot to think about.

Tony Watched them more for their reactions, his mind was already working through ideas for the coming days and weeks, He hated that Roger was in a coma but he also knew that if he was awake he wouldn't let his body heal so it was a kind of Catch 22 plus their was the ridiculous amount of pain he would be. Put simply you don't get a massive pile of Rubble dropped on your head without getting hurt... bad. Then there was Vance a member of the Avengers that had lived in a different World if anything it could be called and he was sitting in a younger body for some insane reason but one couldn't tell just by looking at him that he was older than he looked but then again Tony looked younger than he was also what with the whole dieing thing and then being replaced by his younger self and then being merged with said self it was all a convoluted and confusing thing to keep up with.

Seth was another thing entirely he was younger than the rest newer to the big show well and then Black Panther but He had a country to run so he wasn't always around though one had to wonder how much time he and Ororo Spent together with her being and X-men and him an Avenger .

"Unless you have forgotten, Tony, I am a good fifty years old! I spent most of my life in an alternate future I grew old, I grew wise. I learned from my mistakes. When I came back here I got stuck in this twenty year old body and relived my teenage years. So why don't you listen up, KID. While we are in transition of headquarters how are we going to fend off the hoards of villains that are going to be trying to kill us? Why don't we just relocate, rearm, and get back to kicking tail?"

Tony could hear the annoyance that seemed to radiate from Vance but he continued to Listen he was rather passive though he could feel a headache from drowning himself in a pit of Scotch the night before. He didn't want to deal with this but he just let him get it out he figured that he needed to let them get their frustrations out in anyway they could neither of them so far as he knew had dealt with getting ran over as bad as they had by the unknown intruders, of which Tony still hadn't located or gained any additional information on.

"Tony, I know that you're the one that is the most qualified to be the leader right now but don't you think you could quell a bit of the bitterness within the team by letting us have a descion?"

Tony heard Seth speak he sounded tense but not entirely angry or rather not as hotheaded as Vance was seeming at that moment in time.

It seemed at least for the moment that each of them had finished blowing up he stood their waiting to see if either of them wanted to continue complaining to him or if he was allowed to speak again once he felt reasonably sure he moved standing next to his friend, a warrior that had given himself up for a country that was falling apart at the seems it seemed that fear ruled the world and bureaucracy was rotting at the core.

“Vance, If you are that on edge and ready to blow up at me that easily do you really think that it is smart to be playing around in Steve's head. Do you think that right now we can run after the people that did this when we have no clue who the hell they are? Unless you know more about what is going on then we can't do anything about them...”

Tony spoke quietly his words coming out just loud enough to be heard by the other people in the room but no louder it felt to him that the room was utterly silent. He hated this as much as anyone else but he had learned since he first donned the Iron Man armor, He knew that a person had to be prepared at the moment the Avengers were reeling their home had been demolished and now stood as a testament that not even the earths mightiest heroes were perfect, that even they failed on occasion. Tony would agree that he wasn't always the most rational or even that he always had the good of his teammates in mind seeing them as pawns if it took one of them to die so be it so long as at the end of the day the enemy hadn't won. Even with that though he hated seeing one of his only friends battered and bruised, and probably in as much pain as Tony had been in when he woke up with Shrapnel in his chest in Vietnam, If not more, It was that more than anything that made Tony not want Steve to be awake that would bring the pain into the world that would make him realize how badly he had failed... again.

Rhodes had, Split a while back because they hadn't seen eye to eye in a number of things but Steve was there a friend hurting. With that knowledge came a desire to wallow in a bottle of Rum, Or something else to deaden the world to help him hide from it but that wasn't to be today. Tony had to wonder how many friends he had lost or had destroyed him or turned against him. He had lost count...

T'Challa had a hardened heart to pain. He had gone through so muc h he had learned to cope. He would not be able to lead a country and support a family if he could not block pain out of his mind. But even this had touched him. Captain America had touche so many people's lives and transformed America.

T'Challa sat in jet on his way back from visiting his country. He made sure he left it in good hands and was pretty sure he could trust his steward. The jet began its decent and landed on the grounds of the Avenger's mansion now reduced to rubble.

He slowly walked to one of the only rooms left in tact. In it held their leader the one that dawned red, white and blue every time an enemy was even imagined. T'Challa stood outside his hands on the door, one on the brass knob and the other on the wood. This seemed so surprising to him. The only room that was completely in tact would house a man that was torn, at least for the time being, from this world.

T'Challa stepped in the door and saw Seth, Vance, Jarvis, and Tony standing around their once brave leader. It looked as if they had been in a fierce battle eache resulting in reddened eyes and wet faces.

T'Challa had no buisness asking what was going on so he sat down in a chair close to Steve and leaned over him. He didn't know what else to do.

“Vance, If you are that on edge and ready to blow up at me that easily do you really think that it is smart to be playing around in Steve's head. Do you think that right now we can run after the people that did this when we have no clue who the hell they are? Unless you know more about what is going on then we can't do anything about them...”

The words seem to slice the air in two. It alwyas seemed as if Tony had to have the last word. T'Challa glanced up at Tony and a thought began to tug at his mind. T'Challa decided it would be best to wait to ask and see what was going on rather than to push the conversation and make matters worse. If he had learned one thing from his father it had been that.
